The Tejano Center for Community Concerns gathered over 100 policemen, firemen, juvenile probation officers and a host of elected officials and community leaders for an event last month to honor the neighborhood heroes on the front lines of community service.

A new playground, accessible by children and adults with and without disabilities, was opened over the weekend at Eastwood Park. The new playground was funded by joint venture between CVS Caremark, Houston Parks and Recreation, and Boundless Playground.

A number of local judges and lawyers, including Justice Leslie Brock Yates, Justice Eva Guzman and Judge Michael Gomez gathered at the Community Family Center for the Law Day Workshop for Hispanic youth. The event was organized by the Houston, Hispanic and Mexican-American Bar Associations of Houston.

Recently, thirteen middle school students from Tejano Center’s Raul Yzaguirre School for Success traveled to the Crespo Elementary Fine Arts Magnet School to mentor 26 fifth-grade students in the use of graphics software to create digital art.

Fire Station #20 had an official reopening ceremony in early January. The station was closed as a result of major structural damage due to Hurricane Ike in September 2008.

The Houston Black Firefighter's Association held their 18th annual toy and holiday basket drive this week. For more than a decade the Houston Black Firefighter's Association has been helping families in need during the Winter Holidays. This year, 200 families will receive toys and holiday baskets from the Association.
