From a press release:
There is an urgent need to raise the cultural capital of African American youth through increased exposure to music, art, theatre and dance. The Performing and Visual Arts Workshop at St. James School is meeting that need! St. James School will soon celebrate forty years as an educational institution in the Third Ward Community. The PVA Workshop is a Community Learning Center for performing and visual arts at St. James School where performance professionals, community-based artists and educators can train and mentor youth in the performing and visual arts: music, art, theatre and dance.
OUR MISSION: To nurture and train raw talent in music, art, theatre and dance with professional teachers until potential becomes expertise. Our program includes the four basic strands of performing and visual arts, as well as science, math, literature, economics and social studies. Our methods of instruction focus on a holistic approach that can instill in Pre-K through eighth grade students a desire for life-long learning that provides a sense of self-worth and provides tools for interpreting life’s experiences.
Since 2003, The Performing and Visual Arts Workshop at St. James School has had many performance accomplishments. Some highlights include over seventy piano students showcased in two annual recitals; four dance performances at the Children’s Museum Houston; two Junior Broadway musical performances, one at The Ensemble Theatre-Houston; three Disney musical performances; five festival performances, including Houston International Festival, Sam Houston Festival, and Austin Town Brazoria Festival; Christmas Revels performance at University of Houston.
Both classes and private lessons are offered in music, art, theatre and dance with flex schedules that allow students to participate in a combination of arts disciplines, e. g. piano, art and theatre; or dance, drawing and voice. Classes begin at 3:00 PM and continue until 7:00 PM on Mondays through Fridays. Performances throughout the year stimulate growth and appreciation of acquired skills.

performing arts
Every community should have a performing arts theatre. There is nothing like a good Broadway play or musical. We have a splendid Raleigh NC performing arts theater here at http://www.theatreinthepark.com
