Chronicle Correspondent Roberta Macinnis has a writeup of the Chavez High School Running Club in her latest Running Notebook. The club is a group which not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also stresses the importance of giving back to the community — especially the running community.
From the notebook:
And behind each club member is a group of dedicated adults who are committed to the lesson that it's worth investing in every potential runner — not just the fast ones.
The southeast-area high school has an enrollment of 3,000 mostly low-income Hispanic students. But Chavez was among the first beneficiaries of the Houston Marathon Foundation, established in 2007. Its two-fold mission is supporting local organizations that encourage running as part of a healthy lifestyle and funding programs focused on developing the next generation of elite U.S. runners.
The grant to Chavez provided for running shoes, student transportation and more than 100 free registrations for the 2009 Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon and EP5K.
