    War to play at Orange Show gala

    The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art will feature the rock group War at its annual gala on Nov. 6 at Finger Furniture off Interstate 45. The event also will feature a dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions.

    Books On The Bayou celebration on Saturday

    The Houston Public Library invites the community to attend the opening celebration of the "Books on the Bayou: Houston Reads Together" program. Events run 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. Saturday at the Central Library.

    Books on the Bayou brings Houstonians together to read the same book at the same time, provoking discussion among co-workers, friends, families, and classrooms. This program cultivates a culture of reading in Houston by encouraging people to visit libraries, bookstores, community centers, homes, churches, and schools to discuss the featured book.

    Tennis Association Junior Team Tennis League begins in September. Deadline to sign up teams, which play singles, doubles and mixed doubles within a weekly league, is August 30.

    Branden Griffin, a Texas Southern University student, has been named a Diversity Scholarship Fellow by the New York Life Foundation and the Washington Center. Griffin has spent his summer in Washington D.C. working at the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority.

    Homeless woman mauled by pit bulls

    According to a Chronicle story by Dale Lezon, a woman is in the hospital in critical condition with bites, an eye injury and a broken arm after dogs mauled her Thursday night in South Houston.
